XHTML 1.1 Validation with Tables and TD Elements

I'm rather proud of the progress I'm making as I move over to XHTML 1.1 and I've been using the validator at

http://validator.w3.org

One problem I am having is generating tables. It doesn't like the <td width="" height=""> Apparently, we've moved away from using width and height properties in 1.1 What's the alternative? I tried setting them in stylesheets which was absolutely comical, and took me in the wrong direction. Anyone have any suggestions?

You're right, it is sort of comical. As an aside, how come you need to set width and height anyway? I never needed to do anything like that.
