XFree RH9 ATI Multisync XE17=Purple?!

I installed RH9 from CD onto a system that was running RH7.3 just fine. The video card is
ATI RAGE XL AGP 2X (rev 101)
and the monitor is
NEC Multisync XE17

Both items were recognized just fine in RH9 install (as they had been in RH7.3).

However, now the monitor has a distinct purple tint to everything displayed in XFree. I tried to live with it but I'm unable to stand it anymore.

Every once in a while the monitor flips back to "normal" display (non-purple).

I would write this off to a failing monitor except that I have the monitor hooked to a KVM switch and all other systems I view with the same monitor display just fine.

I have to assume that something in the low-level ATI driver might be yucky since the non-XFree mode (i.e. text mode for logins) also looks purpleish.

All help appreciated.

Sounds like your video card is expiring.

I'm going to try booting up with the Knoppix CD and check how the video card comes up with another vendors distro... Will report back in a while. Other ideas still welcome for RH9 debugging of this...
