I've been working with linux for a few years now but new to xdmcp. I have a high power desktop with FC3 on it and would like to be able to login and run programs from a remote pc, the same as if I was on the server desktop. I believe the xdmcp is the way to do this.

Setup: Server desktop - FC3
Remote desktop - FC1

I believe that xdmcp is up and running ok. I think this because if I do a X -query localhost :3 I get the normal fedora login on desktop 3. However, when I try to login from the remote pc (either using X -query or just the standard xdmcp menu available after pressing F10) all I get is a blank screen withe a black x. It looks similar to the screen that you get when starting X without the windows manager.

For testing the Firewall on the server desktop is turned off so I don't think that is the problem.

I have been looking around for a few days on this one and haven't been able to find where to start. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

the remote xdmcp login screen is disabled by default, you must enable remote xdcmp login. You should see it in the login (xdcmp) configuration. If my memory serves me, you could config this at the login dialog as well (if you have enabled the xdmcp config at login screen).

Cheers.

hmm.. [tt]gdmsetup[/tt] should be the command in order to get the xdcmp setup dialog.

ok...xdmcp seems to be working now. I am actually posting this messgae from the remote machine through the server. The gdmsetup worked and then I had to modify the firewall rules (which had come back on when I restarted the X server).

New problem...all but one of my users can log in remotely. My user does not log in. When I come to the login screen and enter username and password, it just refreshes the screen and goes back to the local signin. All other users (both my wife's user and the root user) login just fine and bring up the desktop. I assume there must be something in the user setup but I have not been able to find anything.

Any help would be appreciated.

Actually I don't know... could it be the "maximum remote sessions" parameter in the xdcmp setup?

It doesn't seem like a maximum sessions issue since only the one remote pc is connecting. After root logs in fine, I can log off, try my user and I get kicked back to the local login. When I try another user, it goes right in without a problem.
