I am trying to copy files from an old file server to a new file server. All of our users have their own personal folders on the old file server, which have a share attribute on each folder for their user account only. Using XCopy, I think I have figured out how to copy their folders and keep the individual security attributes, but it doesn't seem to keep the fact that it is shared, with restricted permissions.

Also, it is coming from a Win 2003 server and going to a Win 2008 server. Thus, sharing may be a little different. Not sure.

Is this possible with XCopy? Thanks

I think I have solved my own question. I failed to have an initial directory created that the sharing attribute could be attributed to something.

HI!,

I SUGGEST YOU TO USE MICROSOFT SERVER FILE MIGRATION TOOL KIT, THIS IS USED
MOSTLY WHEN TRANSFERRING FILES WITH NTFS PERMISSION FROM SERVER 2003 TO SERVER 2008

GOOD LUCK!

I did not even know about the Microsoft migration tool. I did download and test it though. While it appears to work, it seems painfully slow to copy. Xcopy seems much faster. Hmmmmm
