Hi,

I work in a small room along with 7 other users which are fed by a gigabit switch. The gigabit switch connects to the main corporate network via cat5e into a 10/100 switch. Basically we are having a few problems which may be all linked and I cant determine why. I look after the images at work and have a pc on the gigabit switch acting as a file server. Part of the image process requires the use of xcopy to copy files to pc's/laptops. The total data copied is a couple of gig and is all done connected to the gigabit switch and there could be up to 4 pcs being built at once. The actual transfer of data, in some cases is taking nearlly an hour and a half which considering there all gigabit nic's on a gig swicth is very slow? I need to address this but I am not quite sure where to start. I have done some monitoring while transfering files to my pc and over our lan I get an average of 2mb/s and a max transfer speed of 20mb/s. Why would it be so inconsistent and also how can I tell which network device is causing the problem or if its the pc's that cant write the data to the hdd quick enough. Wouldnt you expect around 40mb/s roughly of a gig lan?

Hope this makes sense?
Thanks

oh, forgot to add, could the problem be a cause of the xcopy command. I heard someone say that its not an efficient method of copying data over a network or words to that effect?

ta!!

Depends...are all nodes gigabit in the same LAN connected to the switch, or is something on a different subnet, requiring that it go through the 10/100 path?

Hi,

In this instance, nothing needs to go through the 10/100 switch, all gigabit devices
