Hi Techies,

I have recently installed Redhat 9 on my Laptop IBM-T30. Everytime I tried rebooting it X windows always fail.

Before reporting problems, check to make sure that you have the latest version.
Module Loader present

n 3.2.2 20030222 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.2-5)) #1 Thu Mar 13 17:54:28 EST 2003

Fatal server error:

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.
This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log".
Please report problems to xfree86@xfree86.org.

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

What could be its error? It always detect my Video Card as S3, but its actually an ATI 7500 and my LCD display as an unknown monitor.

Thanks techies,

You can either edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config manually and change the driver to the ati one for your card or if you're not comfortable with that run the command

XFree86 -configure

which will take you through the setup procedure.

I found this from a google search ...

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName "Monitor Model"
EndSection

Section "Device"
# S-Video fuzzing - NOT working currently
# Option "ConnectedMonitor" "TV"
# Option "TVStandard" "PAL"
# Option "TVOutFormat" "SVIDEO"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "ati"
VendorName "ATI"
BoardName "Radeon Mobility M7 LW"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 1
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 4
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 15
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
# S-Video fuzzing - NOT working currently
# Modes "800x600PAL"
Modes "1024x768"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768"
EndSubSection
EndSection

It was for your laptop but with NetBSD, copy your /etc/X11/XF86Config to back it up, then modify the sections as above, it should work.
