I am running FC6 on a Dell laptop. I have the machine booting to a command prompt (default runlevel 3).

When my NIC is connected and I issue [tt]startx[/tt], entry in to the GUI is quite quick. However, when I the machine is not connected to the network, starting X Window is very slow.

I am running KDE as my window manager.

What can I change in the configuration of my machine to allow X Window and KDE to start quickly even when not connected to a network? I can't seem to compose a Google query that gives me a relevant resultset.

Thank you to anyone who started working on this but did not get a chance to post. I figured it out.

The solution was to make sure the fully-qualified hostname of my machine was defined in /etc/hosts as mapping to 127.0.0.1
