hi all unix gurus
I have a problem in my minds so i want to make a clarification from you people.
Recently we have a unix server on which all prerequisite softwares for xwindows
are installed........but xserver is not running on that server.
So either we have to run xwindows on xstations or have to run pc based xserver
software(which we have to buy additionally).
my question is that
If we run Xserver on unix server whether we can run xwindows on pcs using
telnet (connecting to unix server) without using any pc based xserver software?
unix server= AIX
pc o/s = win95
hope to hear from you all

No, you can't just run Xwindow with telnet on PC. That's why I gave you the VNC link. It's a way of connecting to an X system without paying for PC X-server software.

In case you're not familiar with X, the concept of an X server is a little confusing, because they reverse the terminology around from what you would expect. The X-server is actually run on the client computer, while the X-client is what the server runs to receive mouse click info, etc... and execute the expected events. Normally your main server is running the X client AND the server (so anyone sitting at the computer can run X), but any workstation connected to it needs to be running its own X-server for that specific video card and hardware configuration. X-WinPro (my favorite) or some other PC based software emulates an X-server to connect from a PC to a Unix X system.

HOWEVER, VNC (or Virtual Network Computing) allows you to run the X-client and server only on the AIX system, and uses a very thin client software on the PC side to transfer graphic info back and forth.

Now you do have a difficulty if there is no graphics card on the server, meaning you can't run an X-server, only the client. With a traditional X-server/X-client connection that is not a problem, but I think VNC would require a specific X-server to be on the AIX system, in order to send the graphic info to your PC clients.

If this doesn't answer your question, maybe you need to be more specific about exactly what you are trying to accomplish. [sig][/sig]
