A friend recently upgraded his motherboard, processor, case and video card. The mb is an Asus A7V333, and the Video card is an X-Micro Impact T4200 Detonator 28.32. He ran into problems putting his old hard drive in this new setup so I formatted and did a clean install of 98SE. Everything went beautiful until I installed the X-Micro drivers from the CD that came with the card - as soon as I did that, and it rebooted after install, it went to the first Windows Logo screen, then rebooted on its own, then after going to the first Windows screen again, it then locked up on "Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer".

I've tried flashing the bios.
I've checked the bios to make sure AGP4 is enabled.
The X-micro site suggests setting the "IRQ to VGA" in the bios, but his bios has no such option.
I've tried other drivers, such as the Nvidia Geforce4 Ti4200 drivers.
I've tried all of the troubleshooting suggestions from the MSKB on protection errors.
I can get into Safe Mode just fine.
I've tried putting in a a different video card - had an older AGP card, it worked just fine. Reinstalled the new X-micro card, and right back to the protection error.
I've triple-checked that the card is seated properly.
I've checked and there are no jumpers on the motherboard specific to video.
This board does not have on-board video.

If I disable all of the startup options from safe mode, then the protection error also gives up the info of:

"While initializing device IFSMGR:
Windows Protection Error...etc."

I think that's all...I've been fighting this thing for two days straight now and it's got me mad! I see people all over the net running this combination of vid/mb with no problems, but somehow, I'm missing something!

Try using an older version of the detonator driver.
Do you have the most recent VIA 4in1 drivers installed? If so, try reverting back to an older version.
If you can understand it, you probably don't.
