sometimes sites lets you visit a particular page, without writing a file extension. for example ' can this be done making a folder called news, then placing a file called index.html in it?

That is correct. Place a file called index.html in the sub-directory and it will work the same as when you place the index.html in your root directory. No extension needed to point to that page.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

cheers fellas.

seanbo,

What you're actually looking at in this example is a directory named "news". What you name the HTML file so that this happens depends on how the server is configured. Typically, the first default file name is what you would want to name your files to make this happen.

For instance: If the server was set up to use index.html as the default file then you'll want to name your file this. If it is home.htm then you'll want to name it that.

If the default file is supposed to be default.html and you name your file index.html, the page may still display, but the file name will also show in the browser URL.

Got it? My explanation may not be entirely clear. Basically, check with your hosting company to find out what the default file name is for your server and name your files appropriately.

Good luck,
-Ron
