We have several servers at our site, most of which are 2003 but we also have a few 2000 servers. All of our servers are set to download updates from our WSUS server and notify for install. One of our 2000 servers downloaded updates a few weeks ago after they were approved. We never installed them, but then yesterday all of a sudden we were getting prompts to restart the server. I went through the event logs and yesterday morning at about 8.30, the updates were automatically installed. As far as I remembered, there would always be a log event saying that the installations were strted by <USERNAME>. But on this server, there's none. just logs to say that each update was installed successfully and then one to say a restart was required.

has anybody seen this behaviour before or does anyone have any ideas why this might have happened - as it seems to me that the updates were not installed by manual intervention

There are some updates just recently, (I cannot remember exactly which ones) that Microsoft insist be installed, even if they are set to Manual in WSUS.

There has been a whole load of complaints about this, as it goes against microsofts policies and the reason for having WSUS.

Could these updates be some of the ones you have seen installed?
