hi!
I have an P630 with running aix51-04.
I have experienced in system crash as a result of running ">wtmp" command. why this problem is happened?

in addtion, /var filesystem was about 300MB and free size was about 20MB.

I wonder if running > wtmp caused the file to lose some necessary permissions? I haven't a system to check on just now, but Googling seems to indicate that permissions should be rw-r--r--

Maybe someone can confirm this? Take a look at for info. about how to prune /var

Good luck.

5100-04 is fairly old... That being said, I have a machine which has been happily running 5100-02 for ages...

command ">wtmp" shouldn't alter permissions/ownership of a file.

have you run an

errpt
errpt -a

after rebooting? This might shed some light on the problem. For instance, the real cause might be something else, >wtmp just a coincidence. Do you have a support contract with IBM? If so and a dump is available, they might be willing to investigate. Of course, they might want you to upgrade to 5.2 or at least 5100-07 first...

Granted that >wtmp is probably not the best way to cleanup, but I've done it on more than a few occasions and has never given me trouble. Except now I'm a bit reluctant to keep on using it...

Run a 'man fwtmp' and 'man nulladm' if you want to work with your wtmp file.
