WSUS service continually stopping/starting

XP system with sp2. This morning starts at 8.18am, at about 8-28am event 7036 (automatic updates sent start command) then 7035 (entered running state) then 7036 (entered stopped state).

Then repeat every minute or two for the next hour at which point it abruptly stops. During this time performance is appalling.

System is set for manual update control.

Anyone encountered this before, its a new one on me...

put this in a batch file see if it helps
