I would like to upgrade from SUS to WSUS for obvious reasons. 6th December being the focus point.

I have 1 DC Win2K. And 20 client machines dotted about over VPN connections. I have one office with 10 XP machines.

So lacking in disk space on my server, I would like to know if I can put the MSDE/SQL solution onto an XP box that has oodles of disk space, and save my Win2K the disk space.

Three partitions c with 1.6Gb free d with 5 gb free and e with 13gb free, but this e gets eaten all the time, so I cannot count on it.

I have an XP box that has 15 Gb on it.

So I suppose the first answer needs to be where would what go, if it can happen at all. Or should I just configure each machine to get its own updates, just want to save some bandwidth, cos we still pay for over the odds downloads.

I don't think you can run WSUS on an XP box either i'm afraid also the WMSDE software that comes with WSUS doesn't support remote connections so i think it has to be on the same box. You can use SQL server to support the WSUS Db remotely but this requires extra licensing.

What about adding another disk to the DC to hold the updates, it wouldn't require backing up as you can download them again if they were lost.

Actually looking at the documentation you might be able to use MSDE standard on the XP box but this will only save you approx 1 gig of space for the DB most of the space that WSUS uses on my box is for the updates.

Exec decision time I think guys. Thanks for the info. To be honest I had really come to that conclusion, I just didn't want to be forced to buy more equipment just becuase MS upped the anti. Really sticks in the throat. I don't need another server. I have a 1Gb server that is basically AD + F&P, so that will do the trick, and I can add on a Maxtor or something for Diskspace.

Really the issue is here that Telstra (ozzie BT) shape your traffic after your limits are done. They are really even more backward here than anywhere else, I can think of. You pays for your connection, then even if you are unlimited they will shape you if you go above a certain limit. I mean what is the meaning of unlimited ?

Wow a company that makes BT look good, it's gotta be a first.
