WSUS over VPN

I'm new to WSUS so this may be a dumb question. I have 14 sites that are connected to our central location via VPN. Is there some way to configure the client machines at the remote sites to check in with the WSUS server for approved updates, but have the client computers download the actual updates using their own internet connections? If so, can the configuration be done using GPO? This sure would cut down on possible VPN bottlenecks.
