we've been having a strange issue with wsus over the last couple of days. All of a sudden the wsus server is not syncronizing with microsoft. There were no configuration changes made to the wsus server itself.

checks of the event log give me the following error:

Event Type:
Event Source: Windows Server Update Services
Event Category: Synchronization
Event ID: 386
Date: 12/20/2006
Time: 10:14:37 AM
User: N/A
Computer: RUTHERFORD
Description:
Synchronization failed. Reason: The underlying connection was closed: Unable to connect to the remote server.

This is the error we get from the wsus admin page:

WebException: The underlying connection was closed: Unable to connect to the remote server.

We have no proxy server. I setup another virtual wsus server to see if maybe a firewall rule is blocking the port communications but it's not as seeing the other wsus server can sync just fine.

I checked all known services, rebooted, checked the wmsde database size. As said before we're not using a proxy, and our other wsus server is able to sync.

My next step, if I can figure this out is to uninstall wsus and IIS and re-install again.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so how was it dealt with?

Are you using any kind of web filtering devices? (outside of a proxy) Mine did the same thing. Original install worked fine and sync was fine for a few days and suddenly it quit syncing and quit downloading the required files.

Just had the unable to connect.

Punched a hole in the web filter for the IP of the wsus server and all is fine including downloads.

Problem solved. It was me overlooking the most simple thing...the network connectivity. I have a virtual server that I connect from a remote location and I neglected the network connectivity on the server being as I was able log in from my remote desktop.

I'm sitting here all morning looking at event logs, and wsus logs, I finally said to myself, let me just see if I can open up IE on the server and browse the web. No luck. Thats when I figured it out. I disabled, re-enabled, and repaired my NIC.

All things a go.

How bout that! Troubleshooting 101 and I failed big time.
