I'm seeing an odd issue with my WSUS server it seems to take ages for new clients to check in when i've reinstalled Windows. The current clients seem ok but i can't be sure until the next patch day, i've checked the new clients and they have the latest WSUS client and are connecting as they appear in the WSUS console but marked as not yet reported (after a few days some appear but it's slow and i have them set to check every 1 hour at the moment).

I rebooted the WSUS server and received an error relating to the Db but i can't find much info on the net and as some clients are updating i'm unsure what this error means.

The error is:

Event ID 421

Connection to database failed. Reason=Cannot open database requested in login 'SUSDB'. Login fails.
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'.. Connection string: Data Source=SERVER\WSUS;Initial Catalog=SUSDB;Connection Timeout=60;Application Name=WSUS SQL Connection;Trusted_Connection=Yes;Pooling='true'; Max Pool Size = 100

I seem to be able to connect to the database using enterprise manager.

I'm running WSUS SP1 on Server 2003 SP1 the server serves approx 400 clients on LAN connections and is a 1GHz P3 with 1Gb RAM and i have all the latest updates applied. I've monitored the server using performance monitor and it's only ticking over so i don't think it's overloaded even though it's a bit old.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

It looks like it is trying to use the NETWORK SERVICE account for the DB. I would try setting up a service account and using it for this purpose. To do that, you will need to create the account, give it permissions to the database, and then tell WSUS to connect to the DB with these credentials.

I'm still getting odd performance issues like clients not reporting even when i've reinstalled Windows and forced an update but older clients still connect ok and download updates so it's working.

what SQL version are you running?

The best way to thank someone who helps you is give them a star.

I had tons of problems with the MSDE until I installed full SQL, just a thought...

I don't think full SQL is an option as we can't afford all of the CALs i'm afraid. I'll take a look at the link.

Thanks.
