WSUS clients not updating / downloading

All of my domain WinXP clients have not been downloading or installing for some time now. I did switch to WSUS 3.0 a long time ago, and I can not remember if it was around this time. Often times, on existing machines, I will just have the update shield appear in the task bar with 0% progress all the time.

Fresh O/S installs that are just added to the domain do not get anything. Below is the log of a recently added computer. As far as client side targeting is concerned, I have tried both enabling and disabling.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I seem to remember having problems getting Windows Installer 3.1 to install via WSUS. Try downloading and manually installing on a machine and see if that machine starts getting updates from WSUS. If it does, you'll at least know where the problem lies.

Well, I ended up downloading and installing Windows Installer 3.1 on this test computer with fresh install. Although it is not erroring out looking for that version, I still get failures, in particular Error 0x80244019. Any help would be appreciated.

The suggested links have not proved to be of much help, but perhaps I am just missing something here.

Here is what I have found. If you look at my last WSUS log posting on this thread, toward the bottom, you will see a Failed Job File, with the URL of my WSUS server. That URL simply points back to the WSUS content folder that is home to all of the updates that WSUS server pulls down. The client is detecting approved updates, but is failing in actually pulling down the .EXE files and running. I AM able, though, to browse directly to that server content folder from the client and run that .EXE update file manually.

After all this, I run a manual WSUS update detection from the client, and the client log shows where it finds additional approved updates (this time WinXP SP3), but fails to download from the URL path again. As before, I am able to browse back to the server via UNC path, and run the .EXE file just fine.

Another forum I have run across suggests this error code points to URLScan running on the server, and thus preventing the downloading of .EXE files. But, I can not see that running anywhere.

Ok. I gave up, configured a brand new Win2K3 server, and put a fresh copy of WSUS 3.0 on it. Server is running in a VMware environment, but that shouldn't matter. GPO was changed to reflect the new server

Downloads still do not look as though they are being pushed down, but I am faced with a new error in the client Windows Update log. On two different test machines, I am seeing error 80072efd all over the place.

Thoughts on this new twist? Found several things on Google that do not appear to have helped yet. My feeling is either IIS settings, permissions, or even the GPO.

Are you seeing any errors in the Event Viewers, besides the Windows Update log errors which you have described?

This talks about Registry Settings and Folder locations to check.

I seem to have a breakthrough, and it appears to be Windows Firewall. I disabled the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing service on both the WSUS server and windows client, which effectively turned off the Windows firewall. I did this, b/c Group Policy has the firewall turned on.

Once I did this, my test client found updates and downloaded just fine. This tells me that Windows firewall is blocking something, which I imagine is the path back to the server (
My question now is where do I build into Group Policy to allow for this, or any, path exceptions? I see where to define local program exceptions, but not external ones.

Update.....It seems that the Windows firewall does not matter on the client, but rather only the server. No matter what the client is set to, if Firewall is active on the server, it all fails. If it is turned off on the server, all is well.

Now, I just need help with what and how to open up on the server? Regulations say we MUST have Windows firewall activated on servers, so OFF is not an option.

I believe the issue has now been fixed. Believe it or not, the issue was that Windows Firewall on the WSUS server was blocking port 80.
