WSUS 3 - installing Distrubtion Server 1

From what I understood when WSUS 3 was released, it was possible to have a remote server setup which would just be a "distribtuion server" - in other words, clients across the domain would all point to one server (SAY WSUSDB01) for their approvals, status etc, but could download their updates from another server (say REMOTEWSUS_STORE02). I've tried installing WSUS on a remote server and pointing ito to WSUSDB01 at the database page, but it says that SQL Server 2005 SP1 or later must be installed. Do I need SQL Server in order to achieve the configuration I'm after? Is it not possible with windows internal database? Or is it not even possible at all?

Thanks in advance

You don't need FULL SQL but SQL express will do fine.
On the first/Main install you would do a 'full' install that downloads from MS.
The second install you set it to get updates from the upstream server.

Oh you know what, now that I think about it ... when I first started reading up on WSUS 3 I'd already decided we'd have to use SQL Server Express Edition, it had just been so long I'd forgotten !! One more question, if I point all of our remote servers to the same SQL server, will there be much performance issues? I don't know how SQL server exchanges data and how bandwidth intensive it is. Some of our offices don't have much bandwidth back to head office (they do have internet connections they can use to download the update files however). I'm just worried that doing it this way may impact the little bandwidth they have. Any ideas at all?
