Can anyone say in fairly simple terms what is the difference between WSS and SPS?

WSS: Windows Sharepoint Service 2.0
SPS: Sharepoint Portal Server
STS: old sharepoint product Sharepoint Team Server 2001
SP2001: old portal product.

WSS is a product for teams to cooperate and share all kinds of stuff, WSS is also free as it is subject to the Windows Server 2003 licence (only runs on that). WSS has a seach engine but it is limited in capabilities (only available when using SQL Server 2000 not WMSDE). WSS also has a poor navigation to allow navigation though sites and subsites.
You can fix all this by adding some components an make some yourself (i now have nice navigation and search for WSS).

SPS includes WSS it is the underlaying tech for the sites in SPS. SPS howerver is not "Free" but adds more features, such as a powerfull search and a Specific portal site that allows navigation trough you sites (hench portal).
I do not have SPS, but it basicly just adds functionality that in some case can also be realized on WSS(but you have to develop it yourself). SPS has something called Area's and MySites that do not exist in WSS on the microsoft site is an overview of the webparts for each product there you can get an overview of functions that are in SPS and not in WSS.

I hope this helps!
