I'm pretty new to WSS, but so far our people seem to like it. Couldn't find info about this problem.

Running WSS 3.0 on Server 2003 standard R2. By default our home page contains the "upcoming events" area, which is great, but whenever a user sets up a recurring event, all of the reoccurences are posted on the home page - even if there's a jillion of them. For example, a monthly meeting that is reoccurring every month for the next 18 months, is listed 18 times in the "upcoming events" section.

I tried to use the "Today" calculation to narrow it down, but without much luck.

Any way to have repeating events without having the "upcoming events" list go on forever? Thanks for any advice.

I can't test this idea as I don't have a WSS installation to hand at the moment. But surely all 18 events are upcoming so the web part is correct in showing them.

The web part on the home page will use a view on the calendar list and this list presumably filters on the event start date (events that start after today).

Could you add a condition so it also put an upper limit on the start date? Does something like StartDate <= [today]+31 work? If so this would just show events that are due to start within the next month, but not beyond.

If this is too restrictive, you might be able to write a new web part in SharePoint Designer that can determine whether or not the event has recurrence rules, then filter out (in code) all but the earliest instance.
