Hi,

I've just installed WSS 3 to run on an SQL 2005 server and it's all working ok. The only problem that I'm having is that I can't get the Search service to start. There are no errors in the event log, it just doesn't start.

I've been surfing around the internet to try and resolve the problem, but have been unable to.

On the SQL server, there is no search database listed. The page for the setting of the search service lists a database called WSS_Search_servername which doesn't exist. I've tried creating a blank database and pointing it to it, but no success.

On the page for "Manage Content Database Settings" the search server box is greyed out, presumably because the service wont start?

The user I'm using to start the service is a domain account.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you activated and configured the search in central administration?

When you configure search in central administration it will create a database for you.

Cheers,
Thomas

Hi,

that's what I'm trying to do but it's not working. Unless I'm doing it in the wrong place?

I'm trying to start the search service from the "Services on server" page, that's all I could see to configure.

Got it working!

I ran windows update, installed an update for WSS and also SQL Server SP1 and bingo, away it went.
