WSS 2.0 and Office 2007

Is there a way to make files saved in Office 2007 format open in WSS 2.0? Right now it will only allow us to download them because it sees it as a Zip file because of the XML. I am unable to upgrade to WSS 3.0 because we use Microsoft Business Portal for Dynamics SL and I would have to upgrade my entire accounting system just to upgrade WSS. Thanks.
