Hi all, hopefully someone else is doing this...We're receiving a flat file from WSIB in an .rcv file format. I want to import this into SQL, however, I have no idea how. The columns are not delimited in any particular way. Is there anyone out there currently doing this, if so, can you please help. Thanks.

1. Use a Text file (Source) connection in DTS.
2. Define file type as "Fixed field, Information is aligned into columns of equal width".
3. When you click next, you can separate the fixed format into columns by clicking after the column. An arrow will appear. If you double-click the arrow it will go away.

You can now take this format and import into SQL like any other table.

I have formatted a few files this way.

Good Luck!

Gradley, thanks for the post, are you currently doing this with WSIB flat files? I think my main problem is the format of the flat file differs from line to line, and claim to claim in the flat file. I think I might look into BizTalk Server.

If BizTalk works for you that's great.

I've never imported WSIB flat files but have dealt with multi-format files.

Do you know what the various formats are? If so,reading in each record as an entire field and manipulating the data using an ActiveX Script is another method I've used. It does get ugly though.
