WRT54G with no DSL, is it still a good AP

I am looking to get my first wireless device and have a few questions.

I thought I wanted the WRT54G Broadband Router, but this is only for wireless access to my test network (25xx routers, 19xx switches, servers etc.) and there is no DSL/modem .

Can I still get full wireless functionality from the WRT54G, will it act like a normal AP without the DSL/modem connection?

I suppose it is not cheaply possible to loop the Internet connection to simulate a DSL/modem connection?

I suppose I should go with just a cheap AP, since maybe in 6 months I will have DSL but the WRT54G is cheaper than the Linksys AP.

Appreciate any suggestions.

Linksys sells a ton of these as just access points. You ignore the WAN port, Disable DHCP on the router, set it to Router and not Gateway mode (an optional selection not really needed).

And connect using the regular LAN ports and wireless ports.

It not only works as a great access point, but as this is one of the bread and butter items sold by Linksys it receives the most support and new firmware attention.

Go for it.
