Okay, so I've had this router for a solid year and its been working great , great router in my opinion and it hasn't cause any problems until now. So i was opening up some ports for my ps3 and i opened up some ports suggested from portforward, i don't know whether it has anything to do with the problem but my router is not assigning ip addresses i had a static ip address on this computer but i tried resetting it and now it won't assign an ip address. Now i am connected to my modem temporarily so i can access the internet. Any help would be great!

Do you have notes or a backup of your configuration?

Did you try defaulting the config to factory spec and then program again?

Does the WRT54G have the lastest firmware?

Have you read the documentation?

And your results for the above...

I don't have any notes for my configuration but even if i did it would be the same as connecting to my modem because i can only get one connection because i have 3 other computers that need to be on it.

Yes, i uprgaded the firmware as soon as it had happened.

I read the documentation and there was nothing about my problem

From your answers and my rereading of your original post this is what I see: confusion about static verses DHCP IP addresses.

1. How are the computers configured, as Static or DHCP?

2. How is the Router configured? Is the DHCP server disabled?

If you are using static, those IP addresses should not be contained with in the Dynamic range. That can cause problems with the DHCP server. For example, DHCP range 192.100.1.100 thru .199, you would not assign any of these as Static IPs. You would only use 192.100.1.1 thru .99 and .200 thru .254 as static assignments.

If I am all wet, let me know. Then spell out how your router is optioned by feature, etc. I can't guess what you have programmed. I need details. I can't read your mind, or the router's for that matter.

Alright ya, haha, my dhcp is enabled, the computer im on now had the only static ip and the rest were dynamic ips, then 3 days ago something happened while i was forwarding some ports. So i reset and tried to renew all the connections but that did nothing. All the computers' connections say that they have limited or no connectivity when connected to the router. I tried going to 192.168.1.1 to access the router and i can't even get to that because apparently its not even giving out a connection, and I've tried resetting the router manually but it doesn't do anything and i just get the same results.

The "limited or no connectivity" from windoz usually means the machine is not getting an IP issued, but it can mean a bad layer 1 connection also. But first let's see if you can connect to the router.

The last thing you mentioned was the router was doing nothing. Was it dead, no activity? If that is the case the power unit may have died.

What is the status of the LEDs on the router? I believe that description is covered in the manual. So you might want to see what it says about the power up sequence (POST).

With just one machine connected to the router, are you getting LINK status?

If that is the machine that has the static IP, try connecting to 192.168.1.1. Do you get the login prompt or page-not-found?

I will wait for a response...

The led lights on the router are fine and when i hook it up to the modem all, the wireless, and internet lights are a go as well as all the connections wired to it. When i connected just this computer i had the same results and i still get the no connectivity. I don't have the static ip anymore because i was being stupid and when i set it up i never wrote it down so now i set it back to a dynamic ip a few days ago. When i try to get to 192.168.1.1 the window does not pop up and it says that i need to check my connection. However with my static ip i was getting connection and could access the internet, i would set up a static ip for all my computers but i dont know how to get it without an already existing ip address and my dns servers.

I am assumming that an "all LED lights are fine" means they are all the proper color and state. That being the case, then it appears that the DHCP server is not functioning. So let's assign a STATIC IP address to your computer. You need to open the Local Network control panel and select the TCP/IP item in the menu and select Properties, then populate the appropriate fields. Use address: 192.168.1.99 as your static address, gateway should be 192.168.1.1 and subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0. Click OK and go to your browser and try to connect to the router.

For testing purposes disconnect the Internet cable going to the router, then only your "test" computer will be connected to the router. Report back with your results.

Been a few days ...

Make sure that the DHCP server is Enabled in the router's Setup page.

Connect the modem to the router. Check that the router is set to Automatic Configuration - DHCP. (Back in your computer, from SYQUEST's last post, use 192.168.1.1 as your DNS address - you only need 1.) Reboot the router (unplug power, wait 5 seconds, replug power, wait till the lighhts stabilize). You should be able to connect to the router, and you should be able to connect to the internet. (Check the router's address, in the Status page. It should have gotten one.)

You can leave the settings as they are or you can change your computer to DHCP (getting an IP address automatically).

Set all other devices (computers, ps3, etc.) to get an IP address automatically. You should be up and running.
