Hi Folks,

This is my first post. I am not really a "Computer Professional" but my purchase of a Linksys WRT54G seems to have pushed me that way!

Here's the deal:

1) I've got the router up and running. Our family PC (windows XP home version) is connected via an ethernet cable and everything is working great. (i.e. no problems access the public internet, using FTP, trillian, etc.)

2) My wife brings home her work laptop (Win 2000) and needs to connect into her mainframe. We connect it to the WRT54G using an ethernet cable (no wireless)

3) When we launch her Cisco VPN client, a connection is established. She can access her LAN and the public internet, but can't connect to any ip addresses inside her corporate firewall.

4) I've done the things suggested by Linksys and her IT dept but there is no change:

- Upgraded the firmware to 2.04.4 (which was supposed to give me a LAN set-up feature but did not!)
- Use an IP "release command" on her laptop
- confirmed that the VPN client was set to NAT transparency.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Webcub

. Make sure that your Home LAN and the Office LAN are on different subnets. Does the office LAN also use the 192.168.1.x subnet? Set the Home LAN to 10.0.0.x in the router configuration.

. Are you current on the Cisco client?

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for taking so long to get back in touch, i've been busy. I'm not sure about the VPN client version. In response to your specific suggestion, I don't see a LAN setting in my router firmware. I have installed the latest version per the Linksys website, but I can't see a LAN configuration form anywhere!

You set the local IP of the router, and its subnet. The default setting is 192.168.1.1, subnet 255.255.255.0

If your office is using 192.168.1.x as well, select a different local IP for your Linksys. 10.0.0.1 is a valid private IP address to use.

Your Cisco client should be 4.x, and not in the 3.x version range.

hmm..i am running vpn client version 3.6.3 through my WRT54 and runs perfectly..

"3) When we launch her Cisco VPN client, a connection is established. She can access her LAN and the public internet, but can't connect to any ip addresses inside her corporate firewall."

Maybe she isn't properly authenticated on her network. Her password isn't validated by the Domain controllers. Try the option to start vpn before loggin on to windows.

I misread the original post: For XP Cisco recommends client level 4.x

If you can access the internet through the VPN tunnel, you need to change settings so that you are using as well the gateway on the remote network.

THe CISCO VPN client has a box on the Transport Tab that says "Allow Local LAN Access". Put a check mark in this box and then save it. Exit out and come back in and establish a new connection.

Hope this helps!
