Wrong R2 Build on CD's?

I have a couple of servers running Windows 2003 R2 and the winver command on both shows:
Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition. Version 5.2 R2 Build 3790.srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447 – Service Pack 1)

However I’ve just purchased a slightly later release of R2 (called R2a on the box) and built date is 27/11/06.

However, once installed the winver command shows:
Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. Version 5.2 Build 3790.srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447 – Service Pack 1)

No mention of R2 at all. In fact the version details are identical to that of a pre R2 Windows 2003 install.

Anyone got any ideas? I’m wondering if Microsoft has put the wrong build on their CD’s.

Interestingly the R2 version labelling is only ammended after a server restart after disk 2 has been installed. Also, if you were to cancel the second disk install, you just end up with 2003 SP1 and not 2003 R2.

here is my theory. You installed the content from the 2nd cd of the R2 release on your older R2 servers and didnt on the newer R2 servers. Pre R2 and R2 is the same OS release, what makes it R2 is whats on the 2nd cd of the media set. i am making this guess based on the fact i have an 2k3 pre R2 DC and an R2 DC, both post the same info on a winver no mention of R2. i never installed cd 2 for R2, i only brought the schema up to 31 so i could make the R2 server a DC on my pre R2 domain.

I guess for it to mention its the R2 version you have to install the R2 cd. I wonder what genius at microsoft thought up that one. Thats kinda screwy.

Because it's not R2 until you install the R2 components. The first disk is nothing more than a standard server cd.
