Can anyone tell me what might cause e-mailed text files in MS Word for PC to substitute odd characters for all apostrophes, quote marks and dashes when the file is placed in Mac PM 7? For example, both open and close quotes in the document appeared instead as O with an accent above, apostrophes were N with a tilde above, etc. I always use MacLink Plus to translate PC files to RTF for Mac and have not had this problem until recently. Is there anything I can tell my client to do to his files before sending?

More than likely you are experiencing font substitution problems from Mac font and PC font.. they could try substituting a different font on the doc before sending it. Are they sending it as a .DOC or .RTF? When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

A call to MacLink support yielded the suggestion to use another file format during translation. Now I translate all the files to Word for Mac rather than RTF and the problem disappears. (I have no idea why RTF no longer works for me.) Another wrinkle--I have the same inappropriate characters show up on web pages in Internet Explorer 5 for Mac--many pages at different sites display properly but others do not--does this suggest anything to anyone about the cause?

I suspect the fonts assigned for those web pages have probably been designated as 'default' bythe page designer, rather than a specified font such as arial. Your default font may be incomplete, or a substandard font, or have become corrupted, hence the RTF problems and the web site viewing problems.

You may have better luck with this question in a forum that is geared to Macs, as this is for Pagemaker, and your problem is not really related to this forum. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
