I made a (very) bad mistake and i tipped :
/chmod -R 505 *
Since I did it I couldn't have a graphical mode.......and I thougth it was because a file didn't have the right
permission. And So, I tipped in text mode
/chmod -R 777 *
And now I can't connect as root nor as user.
And I have an error message which appears all the ten seconds. it's :
var /gdm/gdm-config-parse :wrong permission. should be 750

How can I make my system restart ?
I'm working on it and now I spendding my time.....

I need some help please.

Hi,

That was not one of your best ideas...

Try ctl-alt-delete - that should perform a reboot . Or alt-ctl-F2 should get you a console login prompt - if so login as root and do a '/sbin/shutdown -r now' . If you still have problems when the system reboots you may have to do the same as above again and start-up in single-user mode to carry out repairs. To do this bypass any graphical lilo screen you may have and get the 'boot: ' prompt. Then type 'linux single' so it looks like

boot: linux single

Press enter & the system will stop at runlevel one. From there try to undo your error . You may find that its caused enough problems that you should reinstall the rpms to revert to the normal permissions.

it looks good...I can log on with root access in text mode
But the graphical mod can't be launched. I have the graphical log screen and the picture of gnome (with the foot) and the progress bar. After that, nothing ! The icons don't appear nor the menu bar !
I reinstall the gnome and the x86 rpms but it's the same.....
I think i will format my partition....
