WRONG IP ADDRESS

When I turn on my server first, an IP address of 127.134.02
or somthing simmilar comes up. When I turn on the client first, the right IP address of 198.265.12 is read and the network connects.The server has XP home and the client has win 98.
Can someone explain why I have to turn the client on first and how this can be corrected.

Uhh, 127.x.x.x is an illegal address range. No computer should have this range.

How are the two computers connected, through a hub or crossover cable?

I don't use XP Home but for it to act as a server, you need to give it a DHCP server program to assign IP addresses to client systems. Otherwise you have to manually assign each computer a specific address.

The two computers are connected with a crossover cable and each has its own address 198.265.12 for the server and 198.265 11 for the client. where is the server picking up the 127.xxx address.

198.265.12 and 198.265.12 are not legal IP addresses. Try using 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2. Use Mask of 255.255.255.0.

accessdabbler ip addresses cannot exceed 255 for any of the four octets in an adress. try 192.168.1.1 and a mask of 255.255.255.0

LOL, sorry, I was focused on the 198 part! Stupid me didn't notice that 265 is completely wrong. LOL

Yeah, if he's getting an address of 265 he's got some sort of virus or his system is completely screwed up.

CHANGED MY ADDRESS TO 192.168.0.1
****STILL***** WHEN I TURN THE SERVER ON FIRST, THE ADDRESS
127.0.0.1 COMES UP. I CAN EVEN PING IT. WHERE IS IT SO I CAN ELIMINATE IT?

On the Win98 machine, go to Start > Run and type Winipcfg. Show the details.

The NIC loopback address is always 127.0.0.1 you can't eliminate it.
