Wrong colors on the page?

I am new to adobe Ilustrator. My problem is: while working In the preview mode (I just found out this minute that there are other modes)I will put a shape on the page and fill it with color. The color fill on the page will look different from the color fill on the tool box. The Navigator and the Appearance box colors match the chosen color.Colors like reds and dark browns will match. But grays, greens, and yellows that are not chosen from the palette, appear on the page as fills for my shapes when I choose other color fills.

I just bought a new color cartridge to test the actual print color. Mine was totally dry and I could not do a print test. I cannot do that until tonight. Can anyone offer suggestions of how I get the colors to match?

Check the color mode of your document (it's either CMYK or RGB). Then make sure your color palette matches (there's a little arrow on the top right corner of that palette that allows you to change the color model). You may have a CMYK document open which will dull down many RGB colors. It's not a bug, it's just to help you see what your file will look like if you send them to a commercial printer.

In your print set up make sure you are using the profile that matches your output device (your printer). This will not ensure a perfect match but it will bring you much closer.
