Hi all. I am at wits end trying to get WPAD working correctly on my network. I have an ISA 2004 server (SP2) which is acting strictly as a web proxy/cache server. It is a unihomed machine. This machine is also acting as our content filter device. It is running a program called Smart Filter for this purpose.

I have set up WPAD via DHCP and DNS following microsoft technet articles to the letter. On my ISA server I have configured Auto Discovery for port 80. I have tried other ports as well. My web proxy is set up on port 8080. In Internet Explorer, if I manually pick my proxy server it works perfectly. But as soon as I choose to Automatically Detect Settings, proxy no longer works. I instead make a direct connection to the web. I have verified that wpad.dat and wspad.dat exist on the ISA server by going to I am presented with a download option when I go to that location so I know it's working correctly. I even tried moving these files to another server running IIS for testing purposes. Once again it did not work. I cannot figure out where this is failing. Any ideas?

It sounds like the registry key for connections has become corrupt and you will need to replace with the original.
This happened to us when we changed proxy settings on 2000+ systems.
Use the following reg entry to overwrite the corrupt keys with this (make a .reg file and copy paste this into it then run)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
