WP 8, Tools/Proofread/Spell-as-you-go

For some reason when I have the subject tool activated it "red underlines" everything in the document and if I de-activate it nothing is "red underlined". Hasn't always been this way. I like the feature but the underlines all over the page are annoying. Spell checker works and will only check the misspellings. Anyone have a suggestion?
