Our office has W2K Domain. We are replacing worksttions and purchased a number of Dell 2400's with each coming preinstalled with XP Home and WP11 pre-installed. "Wiped" the drives and installed W2K Professional. All updates in place. As Administrator, I then installed all of the programs we use including WP11. Works fine when logged in as administrator. I copied over the profile to "default user" so everyone would get the same set of programs to use. Created a test user on the server and then went to the workstation and logged in as the test user. No problem logging in. Tried to launch WP11 and I get "Cannot initialize templates. Most likely reason is an invalid template path." Any suggestions as to how I can at least get my user to be able to launch WP11? At this stage we don't need the templates. Quattro Pro launched perfectly (no templates perhaps).

I have had this same problem with XP pro. I have tried changing permissions, Registry permisions, and anything else imaginable.

I have tried Corel tech support and they require that i call a 900 number or pay a one time fee of $39.95. I work for a University and no one here is going to pay for that phone call.

Let me now if you find any resolutions to this.

I am currently tracking down the University IT dept. that runs the 30+ computer labs to see what they do to by pass this problem.

I got a solution for the Invaild templates paths!

It is a registry hack. You need to install WP11 as administrator but do not launch the WP11 program. Log in as a user, open WP11 (assuming it opens) and the close out of program.
Then, still logged in as a user go to Regedit>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Corel\WordPerfect\11\Location of Files and delete the Location of Files key and all sub keys.

Now, log out as user and log back in as administrator. Copy the profile that you just opened WP11 to Default Profile. This worked for me on an XP build.

I have just had the same problem with "cannot initialize templates" error message. I deleted the location of files key but need more information about the profile. Are you talking about the Corel folder in Application Data for the user. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling WP10 but still no luck when logged on as the user. All is fine when logged on as administrator.
Thanks for any info - KingstonDiane

Try renaming your projects.usr file(s). Then start wp. If that doesn't work, rename your wp11us.wpt file as well and then start wp.

I had some success with some registry work... I went to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\Corel\WordPerfect\10\Location of Files\EN and changed the entry for "Template Folder"

Well, I also the got error. Here how I solve it:

1. login as administrator and gives administrator privileges to the user(s) that WP gives the error.

2. logoff and enter as the user(s) and run WP.

3. eliminate the administrator privileges to the user(s).

4. restart and verify for funtionality.

Seemingly is a registry bug that loss the registration of the templates path. 'Cause the user don't have privileges to change the registry, it cannot update the registry key with the true info. When logged with administrative privileges, it can makes the registrations.

Here is my environment: I got WinXP workstations with a Win2K server. The station login user is controlled by the server, not local. WP locally installed in each station.

In my case (and for the benefits of others with the same scenario) if you have the users assigned by a server, you have to add the user to the workstation from the server and gives the administrative privileges just to make the corrections to the local registry. When finish, delete it.

Well, hope this can help.

A user in my organization came to me today with this same problem on WP11. We're using a Win2K3 server and XP clients with roaming profiles and folder redirection.

"Application Data" is one of the folders we're redirecting to the server. Last week I changed the path of this folder from their profile directory: (\\servername\profiles\user.name\)
...to a new location:(\\servername\apps\userdata\user.name\)

To fix the WP11 template path problem I logged onto a client as that user, with no Admin rights, and was able to use regedit and replace the string "profiles" with "apps\userdata" for all the entries at: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Corel\WordPerfect\11\Location of Files\EN

It seems to be working now.
