wow, newbie at Tcat

well, I have no idea what Im doing. I installed Apache and it works. Now I was told that Tomcat is the next logical step to have a 'webpage'.
I installed tomcat and I can get to

http://localhost:8080.

But now what. I have seen some online tutorials and they are all kinda over my head.
They all seem to assume I would know what they are talking about. ex. -

http://www.devx.com/webdev/Article/16416/0/page/4

Is there a more newbie oriented app for apache or do I need to struggle thru this or give up altogether?
Or how can I make my own xp hoem pc act like a nice little server for all to share?

But alas methinks I need to get the Tomcat for dummies book..
and if tha tfails, back to 1&1 for webhosting
