The store computer recently had a virus , so a computer guy came to fix it. He cleaned things up and installed a new virus protection, but now we cannot connect to the POS system. When I go to connect, it gives an error message that says "cannot connect to the database". I also tried disabling the new virus protection and then connecting and that didn't work. Do you think it could be fouling things up? What should I try?
thank you so much...Lori

Odds are the Anti-Virus didn't do anything, unless it thought that the database files were infected. In which case all bets are off.

Has the SQL Server service started? Check and see if the services are running in the Computer Management > Services applet.

Find the ERRORLOG file for the SQL Server. It's in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Log by default and see what it says about why the service won't start.

Hi - thank you for replying. When I try to connect - the error message says:
SQL server cannot find the default instance (MSSQLSERVER). Please specify the name of an existing instance on the invoation of sqlserver.exe

I don't know what that means....

Probably that the service isn't running.

Check the services as mrdenny says...they may be set to start manually. If so, I suggest changing them to start automatically.

Right click on My Computer icon, select Management, expand Services and Applications, click on services.

The other issue is you might have a named instance...we are assuming you know what type of instance was installed and are calling it correctly (you show you are trying to connect to the default instance).

Everything looks normal in there.

It is a little concerning that there are three from one day. Does this machine get rebooted often? Each time the SQL Server is restarted a new file is created, so the only way you should get three files in one day would be if you rebooted the machine a few times, or if something stopped and restarted the SQL Server service a few times.

I'm also not seeing any database backups in the log file (just something else to think about setting up at some point).

also - the guy that was here on the day that the 3 error logs originated must have done the rebooting when he was "cleaning" things up....
I know the name of my data base - is there someway to check and see if it is available? I'm starting to wonder if it got erased? thanks -

That one looks fine as well. If the system is working now, then the database didn't get erased. If would be very hard for someone to erase a SQL Server database without knowing how to do it.

I just don't know what to do. The main problem is that I can not connect to the database server. I did some looking around and found the database file that I want to open, so I believe everything is still there - it just won't let me open. The message says the server either doesn't exist or I dont have access to it. Please stay with me on this - I called the microsoft help number and was told they quit supportting SQL 200 in 2007. thank you - Lori

Is the database on the same machine that you are running your POS system on?

Did the guy that cleaned the system install a firewall, or change the firewall settings at all?

The SQL Server appears to be working correctly, you just can't connect to it for some reason. You might want to get the person that "fixed" things to come back (at their expense since it worked when they got there and was broken when they left) and have them fix what ever firewall changes they put in place.

If that isn't an option take a look at faq962-5481 and go through the steps there and post all the results here and I'll take a look the results and see what we can come up with.

ok - I'll try that tomorrow - thank you -

Ok - when I did the ping - it came up a small black box with cursor for just a second and then went away. when I tried the telnet one - same thing although it looked like it stayed up a tiny bit longer - maybe a second or two; no error message either time - it just went away. I tried both of those things twice. The back office computer shows that it is running when you mouse over the icon, but when I click to open up the manager, it won't actually let me open it.
The guy that was here downloaded server 2008 (mine is the SQL 2000) but didn't end up completely installing it. Should I uninstall it? He also installed new virus protection. When I looked at the frirewall, there were a couple boxes regarding SQL that were checked in the exception area. (to the right of that the "group policy" says no - I don't know if that is important or not.)
Also - I checked on the file share and it appears I can easily open folders from the other office. Is that what is meant by the question regarding file share - question #3?.
I'm sorry about my limited knowledge about specific terminology. I sure appreciated your willingness to help...Lori

When you perform the ping and telnet tests, you should open a command window first. Then enter the ping (or telnet command).

Click Start -> Run
Type: CMD
Click OK

There will now be a black box (that won't go away). Now run the ping and telnet tests from within the already existing black box.

If anything appears after you run the command that "feels" like an error, you should copy/paste the message here. To do that, click the icon at the top left (in the title bar). Click Edit, then click "Select all". Click the icon again, click Edit, Click copy. Then, paste the contents here so we can have a look.

I'm guessing there were probably error messages in the windows that closed, you just didn't see them. Please follow George's instructions to open a command window, then run the first two tests again and post anything that comes back. (George put how to copy the information from the command line window as well.)

Thanks George.

I tried a couple of different things because I'm not absulutely sure at this point what the name should be. This computer (the main one that everything runs on I thought operated under POS as its name. The back computer shows that \\DF4STL21 is running. I don't know if that is becasue it is the back office. Anyway - here are the test results...

OK, you'll want to put a space between the command (ping, or telnet) and the servername (DF4STL21). The brackets and the slash marks aren't needed either.

You'll want do run commands like this.

Code:
ping DF4STL21
Code:
telnet DF4STL21 1433

Now is DF4STL21 the name of the computer in the back, or is it the one with the POS database on it?

We'll get there, sometimes it just takes a little while when doing this stuff over a forum.
