I have a workstation that has mysteriously started to hang on the blue startup screen. It just sits there for hours on end. Have tried everything from going to VGA mode, trying a rescue disk, combos of the two. Any other ideas? It had been working fine for almost a year now.

No, there have been no changes -- hardware or softwarewise.

Yeah, we're on a NetWare LAN with 3.11 and Small Business 4.2 servers. But that does remind me of something. We had just installed NetWare's client 4.7 for WinNT when this happened. So there was a change in software. Someone has theorized that there was not enough memory on the local drive for the new install and that caused our problem. Other workstations where we installed the 4.7 version have been OK.

Try powering system up w/out network connection (disconnect cable from network card) - same problem? As I understand the workstation hangs on blue screen (when the device drivers are being loaded), NOT on the login screen when it might be blamed on the NetWare client...

Regards!

Yeah, disconnecting from the LAN did not help. And it does hang on the blue screen -- it does not get to the login screen.

Can you start the workstation in VGA mode? If so (or boot from a DOS boot disk if not and you have a FAT partition), edit boot.ini and add the /sos to the workstation option. This will show each driver being loaded which should help.

It does the same thing in VGA mode. I can boot it with a DOS boot disk and from what I can tell, everything looks normal. With /sos in boot.ini, I can see the following drivers loaded:

ntoskrnl.exe
hal.dll
config/system
c_1252.nls
c_437.nls
l_intl.nls
FONTS\vgaoem.fon
drivers\PIIXIDE.SYS
..\SCSIPORT.SYS
..\DISK.SYS
..\CLASS2.SYS
..\Fastfat.sys
..\intlfxsr.sys

Then it goes to the blue startup screen and hangs.
