I recently upgraded the cabling and Nics to 100 base technology. Installed a 100 mb switch. the server has a 3com 3c905cx Nic and the station has a 3c905c-tx Nic. The station is 40 feet from the switch and the switch is 5 feet from server. I cannot get a Novell login over the 40 foot cable. The switch shows the station connected to it at 100 mb. If I move the work station to within 15 feet of the switch I get the Novell login. I can only connect at 10 megabyte on the 40 foot cable.

I'd be forever grateful if someone could tell me why this is???

First thing to check is auto-sensing on the kit. Force it all to 100mb Full duplex. Auto-sensing is crap. Lee Smith

If you made your own cables and didn't buy 'factory made' ones, I suggest you replace them all.
