I have a prospective client who wants a website to sell a book (that he thinks will take off! :) Making the website itself will be a very small quick job. I was thinking of doing this project and taking a cut of each sale instead of charging a flat fee. He would take care of the hosting costs.

How much percent do you think is appropriate to ask for and has anyone ever done this before and have you succeeded?

Save yourself the hassels and just charge him for the work. If not you need to find out what his profit from each book is and take your percentage from that. Remember he pays for the hosting, he pays for the printing and shipping, he probably pays for the bank to accept credit cards, etc.

The answer is "42"

I will be administering the site, so will know this info. I just wanted to know if anyone has ever had a successful experience with that and what was the client selling?

Thank you for your response.

If you fancy becoming an entrepreneur then try it! Books and prints are usually fairly high margin items - I would ask for 15% on sales value (as long you get at least 10%). I have found it to be a good investment and a good earner. It's also good value for your partner, as you will make all efforts to produce an effective website for his sales.
