hello board,

Please, patiences a re new to this...

here's my project:
I have 4 machines, all running W2K Pro in a Workgroup fashion, no Domain Server. All WS are setup w/ MS For workgroup w/ Print & files sharing, w/ IP/tcp as the protocol, w/ static IP address, (unless there are better soluctions), the Workgroup will have no DHCP server to assign IP addresses.
2 machines have working NICs w/ CAT5 cable directly to a Linksys 8-Port Workgroup Switch (model EZX88W) - "here becomes confusing, when the use of the term Router instead of a Switch", so please, use the correct term for the hardware piece.

Now I want to network these 4 computers to share all the resources between each other.
The other two machines will be wireless connected, using a Linksys Access Point 802.11b (model WAP11) to have a static IP. Also connected to the Switch as above like the wired cables, connect to any LAN port?
Besides the physical connection, where to hook up cables to connectors, and if a straight-thru cable will be needed here to connect Switch to AP station?
Or do I actualy need the Linksys Switch to make this work, so all machines can share resources and also connect to internet (ICS not an option here, don't want to se), 'cause some machines may be turned off.

Now, after that is done, I want to bring in the DSL Router (Speedstream model 5861), so the machines can connect to Internet independently. How to hook up the DSL router into this set up above, what port to connect to in the Switch, this Router has 3 LAN connectros and a console connector. Is a straught-thru cable needed here to hook up to Switch??
Speedstream DSL router uses a Static IP (IPs are set manually into the router page setup) address provide by PacBell-SBC enhanced service. NAT is enable, and NetBIOS is blocked, IP routing is enable also.
If I set the machines to use static IPs, how to set enable the DSL router to provide DHCP, DNS, Default Gateway, settings, etc. How will the router assign those IPs?

A diagram could help visualize this:

----- ------------- --------
|ISP | --- | DSL modem-router | ----| Switch|--- ----------------- -------| ================|AP|
|PC1|------|PC2| |PC3|------ |PC4|
------- ------- ------- -------

You probably need a crossover cable to connect the Router & switche port to port (but which ports??)

thx for the help!

First off, whether or not you need a crossover cable os determined by what type of LAN ports you have on the equipment. I don't have the equipment handy to look at, but one or noth may have a port that can be switched to an uplink port by a switch (usually labelled something like MDI / MDIX) that can be switch between requiring a crossover cable or allowing an uplink with a normal (straight-thru) Cat 5 cable. If there is no such port, you need a crossover cable connected between any LAN ports to uplink two devices.

You can not have the router assign addreses with DHCP as long as you have the machines set for static addressing. However, static addressing shouldn't be a problem, and you need to set the default gateway as the address of the router interface. As for DNS, I can't say whether you're router address will work to provide DNS or if you need to set the DNS address to the one supplied by your Internet provider.
