I created a workgroup information file. Now every database I opened seems to be attached to that file. I would like 1 database attached to that file. The rest of the databases on my laptop, I do not want any security assigned to it. Please help.....THANKS!!!

your workgroup information file is set at the user level for all access databases.

if you want to just have one db with a .mdw then have a shortcut on your desktop or somewhere else and in the shortcut, edit the starting string to include the /wrkgrp switch...

To make sure I understand...Once you create a workgroup file on the laptop, then all databases will ask for a password? Unless you create a shortcut to one database, then the rest of the databases will not ask for a password?

Is that correct...thanks for you help!!!!!!!!

Mack2,
There is a faq on Access security here, that will be more in-depth. The short of it is, there is already a workgroup file (system.mdw) upon install. The default user is always 'Admin', and the default pwd is blank.

If you change the admin pwd to anything non-blank, then any .mdb that doesn't have a shortcut pointing to some other .mdw will ask for pwd. Also, if you change the default .mdw (by using Wkgadmin.exe), all .mdb's opened without a shortcut pointing to some other .mdw will open with this .mdw--and if this .mdw's admin user has a pwd then you'll get a prompt there too.

you should join back to the default database workgroup file using the wourkgroup administration wizzard. Then for the secured database modify the following target of a shortcut
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\MSACCESS.EXE" /wrkgrp "\\MyServer\Path1\Mis.mdw" "\\MyServer\Path2\Mis.mdb"
to reference the full path to the MSAccess.exe, .mdw and .mdb files. This way you have security only to that mdb

Thanks both of you. I had it working, and then made a added a user with read writes, and now everytime I open the database, it does not ask for a password, but logs me in as the user with only read rights. Why does'nt it ask me for a login so I can log in as the default admin user????

Looks to me like instead of adding a user you changed your admin access and locked yourself out of the database.....

Yes, I believe you are correct. Is there something I can do about it?

When you log in, even if you are read only you can still modify ur user access options and set them back to Edit etc..... then you can ADD a new user. I suggest reading the FAQS on user access security that are on this site.

let me point you a link.
Microsoft Security FAQS

This should help you, I suggest going through the step by step.

Oups I submited too fast. If you ever really locked urself out of your database, there should be a .Bak with the same name has your database that can be opened has a database.

Thanks I will try that. How do you reinstall a .bak file in access. I have did it in sql, just not in access.
THANKS AGAIN!
