Workgroup-based networking no longer works!

My home network is simple - three XP Pro machines on a switch with specified IP addresses. One of these machines is a notebook computer. Yesterday, everything worked properly. Today, my desktop and notebook can not longer communicate (but the two desktops continue to function together properly).

More specifically, ping works in both directions. Typing \\<ip address> into the address bar of an explorer window works. Typing \\<computer name> in the address bar of an explorer window yields "Windows cannot find <computer name>. Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by clicking the Start button and then clicking search."

Searching for the other computer is "successful" in that the search does return and does show the computer name and in the proper workgroup. However, double clicking the computer yields "<computer name> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. The network path was not found." I get the same result when I expand 'microsoft windows network->[my workgroup]->[computer name]'

These results are the same for both machines.

The only thing that happened on either computer today is that the laptop was set to "Obtain IP automatically" when I attempted (unsuccessfully) to join another domain. As far as I can determine, all settings on both computers are exactly the same as yesterday, but today, things don't work.

To say this is frustrating is an understatement. Also, do not believe that I am missing anything obvious - both machine are turned on, ping works, I have sufficient privilege on both machines, etc. My networking connections are the Windows XP defaults (and I did not change anything today except the IP address, which, of course, I changed back.)

Please help - I need these machines to be networked. I know this is possible since it worked yesterday. What the #($%$# went wrong?! More importantly, what should I do to fix this problem?

You say 'attempted (unsuccessfully) to join another domain' - I take it laptop is now properly back in the workgroup? (might be worth going through the process of adding it to workgroup anyway).

Hi! I have the exact same problem you are experiencing. I am researching a solution, please keep an eye out on this forum and I will share it with you when I solve my problem. The problem seems to be XP only related, I didn't have this problem with my Win98 network. It could be a WINS type problem, in that you can ping successfully, you are getting an ip and internet connection. They just can't see each other in My Network Places. I've tried sharing a folder, changing the workgroup name in all 3 machines, turning on file and print sharing, and enabling netbios over TCPIP, none have worked. I get the error message when I click on "View Workgroup Computers" that I don't have access that resource. I have ensured that I my default account has full administrator priviledges. Very frustrating. Again, I will find the answer and share it with you. Good luck!

Ok, it took about 30 minutes but I think I have it, at least this worked for me. The problem lies on that you tried to join a domain. Once you come back from that and try to join a workgroup, XP seems to still try and log into to a domain, hence the message that you don't have access to the network resource. The answer for me was to take the pc that would not log onto the workgroup and rename the workgroup to something completely new. In my case, I went from the name "workgroup" to "home". XP will tell you that you have reboot, do so. Try to go to the workgroup once you are fully logged in, you should be able to do so, albeit you will be alone of course. Then go to your two other computers and change them to the new workgroup name. It should affect anything to use a new workgroup name, a rose is still a rose by any other name to paraphrase Shakespeare. You should be back to seeing each other in My Network Places. Again, the key was that you tried to log into a domain. After you try that and then go back to logging into a workgroup, XP still tries to log in with a domain controller. Sounds like a bug to me. I wonder if there is a MS Knowledge Base article out on this? I never got that far :) Good luck!!
