Hello,
Everything I've read about security in Access keeps pointing to this exe file that you can run to set up a new workgroup.

I don't have this file, and presumed it was something to do with my installation. However, after reinstalling i still didn't see it.

Now I've used the Workgroup Administrator from within Security inside Access and seem to have security up and running.

Has anyone else used this? Am I to expect problems further down the line? I'm armed with a big thick book (that also talks only about wrkgadm.exe) and this great forum, but have seen nothing about the Workgroup Administrator from within Access.

At the moment, security seems to be working fine - I've set up a new Administrator, and new users, and it seems to be working. I'm just apprehensive that I've done something in a different way to what literature and experience has told me.

Any ideas?

The only time i've seen this program built into access is with access xp... I don't remember if the file was there, but i know i could access it inside access...

What version of access are you running?

Life is change. To deny change is to deny life.

You should be fine. I have always used security from inside Access.

James,
Yeah I've got Windows XP with Microsoft Access (and in brackets it says 2002 and version 10.etc.).

Maybe I'll relax and just presume it's correct - and maybe i should start looking for the most up-to-date books!

thanks for the response,

I'm using W2K, ACC2K and found it in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\1033\WRKGADM.EXE"

The Workgroup Administrator (Wrkgadm.exe) was/is a separate file up to and including Access 2000. it is always installed as part of the installation. In Access 2002 it was included as part of Access itself.

In Access 97 the Wrkgadm.exe file was installed into the Windows /System folder. In Access 2000 it is (I think) installed in the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder (I rarely use 2000, so I'm not sure).

In Access 2002, it is run from the Tools|Security|Workgroup Administrator menu.

So, whether you are running the separate Wrkgadm.exe file or running the Workgroup Administrator menu item in Access itself, you are using the same tool. If you have read and understood the security FAQ paper ( ) you should have no problems running your security setup.

You need the wrkgadm.exe to associate a different .mdw to your database. Since you've created some access security, probably affecting the system.mdw file, have you created a database on the side? It will ask for login info. That's because Access uses only one .mdw at a time. Hopefully you created a security file with your database name as the file name, eg. databasename.mdw
