I created a task that is based on the valid mappings. 'Start task' properties are grayed out. it seems that my privileges are ok, not sure, what else can be the problem.

Create a new workflow and use the task as a workflow component. You'll probably pick up which components are used for which purpose by then..

That's the way it's designed. You can only run tasks in a workflow.

Well, I actually had to think for a while as I started with the early 4 versions and left the Powercenter arena some 2 years ago. One tends to forget pretty fast then..
