Words "Date and Time"

In Office XP, I try to insert the date and time in to a document, but get garbled text, unless I check off the "Update automatically" checkbox. On other PC's, I do not need to check this off. Can anyone explain the difference?

...yeah, right, and I want a red Corvette convertible
