I am using Red Hat 7.2, Kernel 2.2.4 and though I have a copy of Star Office at hand, my grammer 'ain't so good. I down loaded file WordPerfect.tar.gz, I placed the file in /usr/local/wp8 and as root typed the command "tar xvfz WordPerfect.tat.gz." The extraction process works perfect. I then, as instructed in the now available Readme file, typed in "sh Runme." I then get a message:
"Graphic Install Failed
Try Using A Character Based Install"
(I also tried "./Runme" with the same results).

1. Where can I find out how to use a character based install?

2. Better yet, how can I get the graphic install to work? Did I miss some part of my graphic environment when I installed Red Hat, maybe?

3. Am I placing the file in the wrong place prior to extraxting it with the tar command?

Linux is new to me, and I have invested a hugh amount of time (and I do mean a huge amount of time) muttling through trying to learn how to use it all. So far I am pleased with what I have been able to teach myself. I see a day when I beleive it could be my primary OS(cool). I want to learn as much as I can, and would really appreciate any help or advice. Maybe someday I can learn enough to return the favor or contribute in some small way.

Thanks for your consideration Chris,

I have exactly the same problem as you. I've looked for an answer around the WWW, but nothing seems clear. One possible problem is that WP8 needs old libraries to get running.. but it looks like we have the problem with the installation... If I find the answer, I'll post it here. Hope you do the same for I'm going nuts trying to install WP!!

marginal20,

I see your message was posted April 8, 2002. If you have not found the answer to your WP8 install problem then maybe I can help. What I discovered was simple, but I had to almost search day and night until I finally found a discussion group where I just happened to notice a mention about intall problems with WP8 using Red Hat 7.2. They discussed several things, and I tried them all, but what finally did the trick was an RPM called: (libc-5.3.12-31.i386.rpm). Once I installed this rpm WP8 installed without a hitch. The above mentioned rpm gives you a lib file called (libc.so.5). The Red Hat 7.2 distribution comes with (libc.so.6) and what I understand is that its not compatable for WP8.

The above mentioned rpm provides these libraries: libc.so.5, libstdc++.so.27, libg++.so.27, libm.so.5, libc.

Below is a download link to this Red Hat's rpm:

ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/6.2/en/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/libc-5.3.12-31.i386.rpm

I hope this helps. I wish Corel would simply place a statment in there readme file for those with newer distributions of Red Hat (and others) to give a clue as to why it doesn't install properly.

If this works for you, please post back to this site what your results were so others may benifit.

Have a good day, --Chris
