Where my wife works they take name lists from colleges and develop them for printing diplomas...importing them into Quark Express v4.0 as *.txt name lists.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some of them come in tables in Word97...which of course break down too much and come in with formatting all messed up when you convert them to .txt files.&nbsp;&nbsp;They need to come in as &quot;Bob Gene Allen&quot; and so on all on separate lines...they come in with each name on separate lines...and if the person didn't have a middle name that even messes it up more.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>With a group like this there are sure to be folks for whom this is a cakewalk.&nbsp;&nbsp;For my inexperienced mind it's a catwalk.<br>I'm trying to edit the nonprintable characters BEFORE conversion to .txt files to see if I can enable the transition to straighten up like I need.<br>Meanwhile, I'll monitor this thread and see if someone can sew this up for me...and post the same thread in the Quark forum.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><br>

It sounds like you are trying to import ASCII text files into Quark that are delimited by different characters.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some may be delimited by commas, some by quotes and others by tabs.&nbsp;&nbsp;You need to get all of these text files into the same ASCII delimited format.&nbsp;&nbsp;This may be a chore, especially at first.&nbsp;&nbsp;Probably the easiest was is to either require (or request) that each college submit theirs in the same format, like maybe Excel, and then convert those&nbsp;&nbsp;for use with Quark. <br>Well, that's for the future.&nbsp;&nbsp;Meanwhile, lets solve you immediate problem.<br><br>Probably the easiest way to go about this is:<br>1. Copy and paste all Word lists into Excel.&nbsp;&nbsp;They should paste without loss, especially if you match the columns before you copy them.&nbsp;&nbsp;(The columns only need to match in quantity not in width.)<br>2. Any other text files can be imported into Excel and then copy/pasted onto your master sheet.<br>3. Export the files from your Excel sheet to a format that Quark likes.<br><br>Let me know if this works.<br><br>Boxplan

Your tip was right on the money...there's still a little cleaning up to do, but it's a much better result than what I was getting.<br>As for getting the colleges to comply with what we need...that's one of those situations that breaks down into WE work for THEM...so they expect US to comply with what THEY send.&nbsp;&nbsp;(If we want their business) Some of them even send them in as .eps/Mac files and the translation better not get lost along the way.<br>Actually, much progress HAS been made in the last several years as far as getting them to standardize...some of them actually even use the templates provided. <br>Where the rubber meets the road, though, is when you introduce the deadlines into the equation...and if they're late with their name list in the first place, you wind up going WAH WAH and getting it done the best you can.<br>That'll be accomplished easier with your suggestion.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A thousand thanks!
