Word97 indexes that link back into the document

I am using Word 97 and would like to be able to create an index at the rear of a document from which I can "hyperlink" back to the location in the document. Apart from bookmarking each page number in the index (which effort will be destroyed when the index is re-built) is there a smart way of doing this?

The ultimate reason for this is that I then wish to create a PDF version of the document with just this capability.

Any help from any source gratefully received.

John, can you try this?

After building your index, hit Alt-F9 to view the code. You'll probably see some switches in there. What happens if you add the /h switch? I ask because if you create a TOC and view the code, you can remove the /h switch and get rid of the TOC hyperlinking. Perhaps you can include the /h switch when you build the index as you can with the TOC.

Thanks, but the \h switch is already present in the INDEX field - it produces a heading such as "A" for all the entries beginning with A.
