Word97 hangs when opening files

One of my users recently hit a problem. When opening word documents the NT workstaion hung forcing a reboot. I can use his PC and access the same files without dificulty, the user can use another PC and has no difficulty. I have removed the normal.dot file but no joy, I have also reinstalled MS Office.
Now the problem is spreading around his department.
Any Ideas?

I'd make sure there were no viruses in the system first. Then see if you can open Word in SafeMode (with a /a after the URL in run) if you can do this the data key may be corrupt.
Go into the registry and go to key CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/MICROSFT/OFFICE/8.0/WORD/DATA
You may want to export the key (for backup purposes)then delete the data key. Let it recreate next time you start word.
